The bike was used in one article in Sand Addiction Magazine and then in a huge 5 page spread including a cover shot in Sand Sports Magazine. Article that Ran in Sand Sports Magazine
Suzuki Transformed
CT- Z453 Nitrous Fed

I wanted to be a little different from my riding buddies so I picked up a 2005 Suzuki LTZ400. I mostly ride in Glamis but I also make many trips to Dumont and Pismo. I also frequent ride spots in Oregon, Idaho and Utah. I really enjoy dune riding, hill shoots and drag racing. So the challenge was to build a quad that could drag and dune with the best of the best.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

The Z’s suspension was removed and Lone Star 2 A-arms with Fox Float AirShoxs installed upfront. In the rear, Denton Racing in Riverside, CA revalved the stock shock and added a Lone Star 4 swing arm with a Durablue axle. I replaced the stock brake lines with Streamline braided brake lines. The new suspension worked really well the bike was very stabile and felt plush. The Fox Floats out performed my expectations. They sucked up virtually anything that crossed my path. Adjusting for a stiffer or softer ride was quick and easy with the Fox Floats. After blowing a bead on a rear tire during a test ride, I had OMF outer scalloped beadlocks and inner reinforcement rings installed on the wheels to insure safety under harsh conditions.

For steering, a Roll Design steering stem helps to direct this dune missile while a Denton Racing steering stabilizer keeps everything in control, which is a lifesaver while duning through sandrail-generated ruts that can rip the handlebars right out of your hands. Once only found in desert racing, steering stabilizers are gaining in popularity in the dunes. Another huge plus to the Denton steering stabilizer is dramatically reduced arm pump.

A LITTLE BLING

The 2005 LTZ400 is available in either white plastic and a blue frame or yellow plastic with a grey frame. I liked what Suzuki did with the white and blue color scheme but I was going for bling so I picked up Full Bore’s pearl blue plastic kit. I also added the Full Bore chrome gas tank cover. The stock gas cap was tossed for a nicer billet piece from RIS Designs. If some billet stuff is good, more must be better so I ordered billet oil filter and starter covers from Pro Machining of Corona, CA. Pro Tech ATV of Anaheim, CA. supplied billet tie rods and miscellaneous other billet accessories to really finish off the look.

Duning is tough on chrome so for this project I put my trust in Aerotec Alloys. Aerotec does all the plating for Funco, a leader in high end sand rails so I knew Aerotec’s work would hold up well so I sent them the Lone Star A-arms, swing arm, stock subframe and anything else. All of the aluminum parts were then polished by Aerotec.

To dress up the front, a billet RIS bumper was installed NOT PICTURED. I also went with the RIS shifter and chain guard. With all the bling the plain stock heal guards and pegs definitely had to go so I went with IMS pegs and heal guards and had Aerotec polish them to match.

Vision while riding at night is important so I removed the stock lights and replaced them with a Lazer Star handlebar mount light kit. A Full Bore grill replaced the hole where the stock lights used to sit.

BEHIND THE THROTTLE

With all of the suspension mods done and flashy bolt-on parts ready it was time to make her fly. To make sure that this would be no ordinary hopped up Z400, I installed a Boon Dockers Liquid Nitrous kit. For this extreme application and because more must be better, I opted for the big 5 hole setup to push enough Nitrous to smoke any 4stroke.

After our original nitrous tests at CT Racing’s facility in Santa Fe Springs, CA. I decided Nitrous alone wasn’t going to cut it for my Z. I was interested in doing some mild porting and possibly a cam change but wasn’t quite sure what direction I wanted to go in Allen Knowles of CT Racing helped shed some light on what should be done. I knew I wouldn’t be completely satisfied with a mild motor and why build this ride half way? So after a good couple of hours of wrenching I had the bike torn down and the motor dropped off at CT Racing. A leader in quad racing from the very beginning, CT Racing’s Allen Knowles worked his magic utilizing his CT-453 kit. The kit includes a re- sleeved cylinder head, CT specified custom ground Web Cam, 13-1 piston kit. To remain nitrous friendly, I swapped out for a 12-1 piston. The kit also included head porting, 3-angel valve job, valve stem seals, gaskets and a Keihin FCR 41mm carb kit, I had previously picked up a Sudco Keihin FCR 41mm carburetor. The last bits and pieces to the CT-453 kit included a CT Racing Sonic exhaust system, a K&N air filter and a better flowing Honda 400EX intake boot.

After CT Racing completed the motor work it was now time to see what my Boon Dockers fed Z400 had become. Following proper break- in, and with anxiety running high we rolled the Z onto the dyno. Lets talk horsepower. Stock, the Z400 put out 28 ponies. With the CT-453 kit installed, it put out 52 h.p. for an incredible increase of 86%.

It was now time to push the little red button and unleash the flow of Boon Dockers Liquid Nitrous. The bike screamed to 65 h.p. for an unheard of 133% increase in power over stock. You know you’re looking forward to good times when you have an extra 25% of power at the push of a button. Who couldn’t use that extra power on the demanding hill climb at St. Anthony, or the ability to pull on that Honda you’re racing down the drags at Glamis.

I couldn’t be happier with CT’s work and craftsmanship and what better way to complement the motor work then to add a Hinson Racing clutch basket and a set of Hinson clutch plates. I also added a PWR oversized radiator and RIS Designs radiator shroud to insure everything would keep its cool under extreme conditions. My once stock LTZ400 is now respectfully being called my CT-Z453 nitrous breathing monster.
